    It’s That Time Again!
Flea and tick season is upon us once again, is your pet protected?

There are many flea and tick products out there, how do you know which one is right for your pet? We try to help you match up the flea and tick protection that best fits your pet’s individual needs.

Frontline PlusFrontline Plus: Many of you are probably familiar with this popular flea and tick control. It has been available for over a decade and has a very good safety profile. After Frontline is applied to the back of the neck or shoulder blade area it spreads over the skin and into the oil glands at the base of the hair. It will then get slowly secreted out of the hair follicle for about 1 month. Frontline Plus will not repel fleas or ticks but will kill them shortly after they get on your pet. Frontline Plus works great against fleas but we only consider it about 90% effective against ticks. Over the last year we did see a lot of failures in the flea and tick control of Frontline but in all of these cases the product was not bought through a veterinarian but through another retail outlet. When we contacted Merial, the manufacturer of Frontline, about these failures they stated that “Frontline is a product of Merial, a veterinary supply company. The company has not authorized the sale of any of its products in retail outlets. This means that if you didn’t buy it at a veterinarian’s office, there is no guarantee that the product will be effective.”

In other words in order to guarantee that you are getting the right product that was stored and manufactured correctly you need to continue to get it through a veterinarian.

Revolution and SentinelRevolution: A topical product, available by prescription only, which enters the bloodstream through the skin. Not only does Revolution help protect against fleas but it also protects against heartworm disease, sarcoptic mange and some intestinal parasites. Revolution does not protect against deer ticks, but does kill the American dog tick. We will usually recommend Revolution when we are worried about dogs being exposed to mange. It is also a great option when paired with a Preventic tick collar to increase dear tick control.

Sentinel: Is not only an oral heartworm preventative for dogs, it also protects against fleas. Sentinel prevents flea infestation by breaking the life cycle at both the egg and larval stages. This once monthly oral medication does not protect against ticks.

Vectra 3D: Vectra 3D is a new product we are carrying that kills fleas, mosquitoes, ticks, lice and mites on contact. One big plus side to Vectra 3D is that it comes in four sizes: 2.5 – 20 lbs, 21 – 55 lbs, 56 – 95 lbs, and >95 lbs. This product is only available for dogs.

Capstar: Is a pill that works to kill fleas within a half an hour of oral administration. It is very effective for animals that are already infested. This is not a substitute for monthly prevention. It is a good idea to use this in conjunction with one of the topical treatments.
